drabble meme
Merry Christmas and Happy holidays to all of you enjoying festivities and vacations. I myself am finally, finally off (I was working until noon Friday). Things have been crazy the past few days and I'm exhausted so it's nice to finally have some time off.

I'm hoping to get some good work done on the tail-end of my original, fic but I also want to have a little fanfiction fun on the side. So, if anyone would care to participate here is a little drabble meme.

Drabble meme snitched and tweaked from Tumblr:

1. Give me a character or pairing, from a universe/fandom I know, and you enjoy.

2. I’ll hit ‘shuffle’ in my music collection, and I will write you a drabble based on the song you picked.

3. If the song is horrible, or I can’t work with it, I’ll hit Shuffle again - but that’s a last-ditch caveat. I will do my best to make something with every song. No matter how absurd.

Song: On the Wing by Owl City
On the Wing–- Owl City

Breathe and I'll carry you away into the velvet sky
And we'll stir the stars around
And watch them fall away into the Hudson Bay
And plummet out of sight and sound

The open summer breeze will sweep you through the hills
Where I live in the alpine heights
Below the Northern Lights, I spend my coldest nights
Alone, awake and thinking of the weekend we were in love

Tufts of snow tumbled from the sky, settling in Geoffrey's mop of hair as he stood, staring into the curtain of white flakes. The northern hills of Crimea were remote indeed– the perfect hiding place for the rebels Bastion had heard reports of. Here, winter came early and heavy, but Geoffrey's troops had come prepared with fur lined boots and jackets, tents and blankets.

A gust of wind set the snowflakes dancing, a jig that tossed them up into the air only to come sprawling back down in wild eddies. What was it Elincia had said that day? All those years ago, before the war...

He had been walking by the stables when he'd looked up to find the air full of feathers and a pegasus knight circling low as she came in for a landing. He'd to hurried meet her, worried that her mount might have been injured.

"Princess Elincia," he said between breaths. "Are you well?"

"Yes. Of course I am. Geoffrey, whatever is wrong?"

"The feathers," he said, gesturing towards the tufts scattered around her pegaus' hooves.

The tinkling laugh tumbling from her lips set him at ease. "She's molting," Elincia said, brushing her hand down one feathered wing. When she turned her hand over and held it out, her palm was covered with downy feathers.

Smiling, Elincia stepped closer to run her fingers through his hair and brush out the pegasus down. "It always reminds me of snow," she said, but he could not speak for the thrumming of his heart.

Another gust of wind sent the snow whipping into Geoffrey's face, taking with it the warmth of the memory. He didn't turn at the tread approaching from behind, the muted squeak of boots on the fresh snow.

"Everything is in order at camp, general," Kieran announced with jaunty enthusiasm.

"Thank you, Kieran."

"Is anything the matter, general? If you believe I've been remiss in my duties–"

"No, Kieran. You've been doing a fine job. I was only... thinking."

"About what, sir? I would be honoured if I could assist you in any way possible."

Geoffrey brushed the snowflakes from his hair, a hint of a smile on his face. "About pegasus feathers."

Merry Christmas! <3

Hmm... how about Tana or Tethys? Paired or not paired is fine. :3

Song: Alice by Moby
Because trippy techno songs always make me think of Tana. O_o

(Also as a side note, there's no official lyric sheet for this song and the lyrics on the internet are clearly wrong so the ones posted here are my best guess.)

My head keeps turnin' turnin'
Like Russian roulette
Thoughts are like bullets
I cannot do this...do this...do this... do this... do this

'Cause this is the right world
This is the wrong world
This is the one world
This is the done world
This is the thought world
This is the sharp word
Can you be caught girl? Here in the thought world.

The hardest part for Tana was not, as perhaps it should have been, when they faced the Demon King himself, but rather when she stepped through the yawning gates of the Black Temple and said farewell to the sky.

She paused a moment on the threshold, glancing over her shoulder at a sliver of grey sky, her chest clenching at the thought that it might be the last time. Her racing thoughts returned to the conversation a few minutes prior with her brother. Innes's air–sober at the best of times– now, downright sombre. The weight of his hands on her shoulders. The hint of softness in his voice, so rare for him.

"Tana, as crown prince of Frelia–" And then as she opened her mouth to snap an objection, "And as your brother, I would ask you to stay outside with the rearguard."

"What? No. You're not leaving me behind!"

"If anything happens to me, you are Frelia's only heir. It's absolute folly for us both to go on."

She crossed her arms, set her jaw, and stared him down. "If we don't seal away the Demon King then it won't matter whether or not there's an heir at all."

"You're shaking."

And though she hated it, it was true. Every limb betrayed her. She could feel the evil that oozed from the temple like a thick mist, filling her lungs with despair and terror. The black stone pillars on either side of the entrance were carved with scenes from nightmares, the Demon King's deeds in the last war and the feats of his minions. She shuddered to look on them, to look into the gaping maw of the temple, and to know that to pass through them would mean to give up her place in the heavens. On Achaeus's back she could see the whole of the battlefield, dive in and away; she was always free. To face the Demon King she would have to enter the temple and be entombed by its thick stone walls.

It would be so easy to stay behind, to give in to Innes's entirely reasonable request. No one would think the less of her for it. Just a word, a nod of her head, was all it would take.

But when she looked past Innes she could see Erika standing on the steps of the Black Temple, adjusting her scabbard, peering into the darkness of the abyss. She, too, was second to the throne of her country. By all rights she, too, should stay behind.

"Tana?" Tana started as she felt a slender hand on her shoulder. She looked over toe find Eirika, standing next to her in the threshold of the temple. "Are you all right?"

She offered Eirika a wan smile. "Yes. I'm all right," she said and stepped through the gateway into the Black temple.

The sky was behind her, but her dear, brave friend was beside her.

That was really beautiful; I like this take on Tana. I think this suits her really well. Loved it! <3

I hope you had a merry Christmas and hope you have a happy New Year!

Gah, I love this little drabble, particularly the end line since it glowed with sweetness.

I love friendship drabbles anyway. Could you do a drabble about Amelia or Neimi? Or both as friends?

What's your original fiction project about, if you don't mind telling me?

Song: Angels by Owl City
You asked before about my story and now that I finally managed to throw together a summary here (I find them really hard to write) I'll answer that post on my other entry and leave this one for the FE drabble.

I don't know why, but my player picked another Owl City song, which, considering how much music I have is really odd, but in any case, here it is...

Angels– Owl City

Through the glass in my bedroom window
In the bushes far below
I thought I saw an unfamiliar shadow
Among the ones I so clearly know

I've been sleeping with the night light unplugged
With a note on the rocking chair
That says, "I'm dreaming of the life I once loved,
So wake me if you're out there."

Living close to the ground
Is seventh Heaven cuz there are angels all around
Among my frivolous thoughts
I believe there are beautiful things seen by the astronauts
Wake me if you're out there

When Amelia pushed back the flap to Neimi's tent, she found her friend sitting cross-legged on the floor, twisting small blue flowers into pliant branches, and shaping them into a wreathe. "Are those... forget-me-nots?"

Neimi smiled up at her and nodded. "Mm-hmm. I managed to gather some this evening after we made camp." As Neimi continued to weave, Amelia took a seat next to her, leaning her head on her knees and wrapping her arms around her shins. "I haven't seen them in days and I was worried I wouldn't find any in time."

Amelia tilted her head. "In time for what?"

Neimi's hands faltered and she looked up. "For Souls' Night. Don't they celebrate it in Grado?"

Puzzled, Amelia shook her head. "No, I don't think so. What is it?"

"Oh..." Neimi dropped her gaze and her eyes were brimming with tears as she looked at the half-finished wreathe in her hands. "We always did in my village–and in most of Renais too, I think. It's..." She paused to wipe her eyes. "You make a wreath and set it on your door as an invitation to the souls of the people you know who've passed.

"An... invitation?"

Neimi nodded. "For them to visit your home on Souls' Night." She glanced around at the tent she shared with another young archer, her brow furrowed and her lower lip trembling. "I hope a tent counts."

Amelia offered her a smile. "I'm sure it does. So you're hoping your family will come and visit you?"

Wiping her eyes again, Neimi nodded.

Reaching out, Amelia picked up one of the branches of five-petalled blue flowers and twirled it between her fingers. "That sounds really nice. Do you think I could... help you with your wreathe?"

And once again Neimi's eyes filled with tears even as she began to smile.

Re: Song: Angels by Owl City
Sorry about the late reply. First of all, thank you very much for the summary and the drabble! :D Your original fiction idea does sound interesting, I hope it goes well for you.

I like the drabble a lot. It's exactly the sort of sweet scene that I imagined Amelia and Neimi having. Your inspiration probably in part came from their support conversations, right? Anyway, the concept of Souls Day is a nice idea, it actually reminds me of a festival where people believe the spirits of their ancestors visit them on a certain day. The characterisation is good, as Amelia is the sort of person who would want to help Neimi with the wreath and Neimi would cry a lot. My favourite line, I think, would have to be 'Neimi's eyes filled with tears even as she began to smile'

Hmm....Owl City seems to want to take over this meme, maybe the members are all secret FE fans too? Either that or your Ipod has a life of its own...D: 'psycho music'
