It's nice being on vacation. I actually felt relaxed today. I went out to lunch with logospilgrim and had a lovely time. And then I came home, made a cup of tea and played Harvest Moon: The Grand Bazaar. It's really wonderful to have some time off during which I don't need to do anything specific or travel anywhere. I can just rest. And stay up late writing. ;D

Anyway I've been wanting to do an updated version a certain meme:

Post snippets of your Works in Progress on your journal.

I did this meme in July 2009. These were the fics I had listed then. I'm happy to say that I did in fact finish several of them:

( Seth/Eirika multi-chapter – Distance ) -> Distance
( Seth/Eirika drabbles - Falling )
( Seth/Eirika multi-chaptered – Untitled )
( Seth/Eirika – Utitled one-shot )
( Seth/Eirika oneshot – Invincible ) -> Invincible
( Current project - Artemis/Holly – Untitled ) -> Hunter Hunted

Meanwhile I've added some new ones to the list:

Mary Sue challenge (2,249)

"Now I don't like to judge – you know how I am: Let be, I say! – but my first thought was, how can she stand wearing black in this weather? But she didn't seem to feel the heat – not a drop of sweat on her while the rest of us were in a lather from the heat and the fighting. She was lean and long and fresh and smelled of lavender...

"But I'm getting ahead of myself, I guess.

Mary Sue challenge: I don't want to say too much about this one. I do have an idea for it but, to be honest, I find it difficult to stay engaged for long periods with FE fics that aren't S/E-centric so it's been a while since I've touched this.

Bloom (7,642 words)

Eirika remembered her mother only vaguely as a dim, shimmering presence, soft as moonlight and just as difficult to grasp. It was her touch that she remembered me than anything, the gentleness of her hands, stroking her long hair as she sat in her mother's lap, the warmth of her arms hugging her close, and sometimes, he broken melody of a half-remembered lullaby.

Bloom: Anyone remember last year when I asked for flower-based prompts las Christmas? I had several Seth/Eirika requests which I finished. Later I was toying with writing an extra piece or two and making it a collection on ffent. I think I was just about done with this except that I had some concerns about the quality of the collection. It's all pretty light stuff, purely fluff. I worry sometimes if people are going to start saying I'm past my prime in the TSS fandom. I mean Sunrise is by far my best FE piece and I'm not likely to write anything quite so epic again in that fandom. So anyway, I am conflicted.

Untitled (7174 words)

The castle kitchens were not a place Eirika normally found herself in. In fact, the last time she'd been in the kitchen, she'd not been tall enough to see over the tops of the tables, her hand wrapped up tight in her maid's larger one. She had tried to stand on the tips of her toes to see the sweet-smelling confections the kitchen servants had been making, but she'd had to content herself with the tantalizing scents that wafted all around her as they'd passed – here the smell of something spicy, a cinnamon soup perhaps, there a whiff of almond and fresh strawberries.

Eirika tugged the shawl she wore over her head, making sure her hair was well covered.

The woman next to her, Mistress Sorna, one of the head cooks, peered at her. "Are you certain about this, my lady?"

"Yes," Eirika replied, squaring her shoulders. "I know how much work is involved in the preparations for the banquet. I'd like to disturb things as little as possible."

"That's very gracious of you, my lady. But are you sure you wouldn't like me to just make it myself? That's how most of the ladies here have done things."

Eirika shook her head. "No. I really do wish to do it myself – or at to try at least. I know I'll only be following your instructions."

The furrows in Sorna's brow smoothed and the lines around her mouth softened into a smile. "You really are fond of that general of yours, aren't you, my lady?"

Eirika could feel the blood running hot in her cheeks. "Yes. I am." The tradition of a bride offering a sweet confection to her future bridegroom went back further than anyone could well remember. Among the peasant folk, it was believed that sharing sweets the night before the wedding brought about a fruitful marriage. Most noble ladies simply had something made up in their name, but Eirika had insisted on participating in the process herself.

Texture: So like the lj-cut says this is for the mission_insane challenge, for the "Texture" table. I have three of them completed. They're focussed on Seth/Eirika starting out with the two of them being engaged and exploring the early phases of their new life together while they try to help Grado rebuild.

Untitled (13,301 words)

One: Treason

Cormag did not consider himself to be a cheerful sort of person. Rather he was of a similar temperament to his wyvern Genarog, who was as likely to snap at anyone as not – even his rider. That being the case, neither the bright beams of sunlight slanting down into the castle courtyard, nor the freshness of the morning breeze on his cheeks, nor even the scent of wildflowers in the air had much impact on Cormag. His limbs felt light and limber and his belly was full and for all that he was grateful, but cheerfulness was not a likely result.

Princess Eirika was another matter entirely.

Crime: This one too, is for the mission_insane challenge, for the "Crime" table. It's nearly finished but... I kind of hate it. It doesn't work. The last chapter... Originally I had planned to write a series of linked one-shots but then it morphed into an actual multi-chaptered piece but somehow the switch threw me off balance and I it doesn't feel right. There are chunks that I like but I feel very unsatisfied with the piece and it's become a thorn in my side all year. I was thinking of just trying to finish it and then posting it on my LJ rather than ffnet. I mean I've written so much of it and I'd hate to think I wasted all that time...

Artemis/Holly untitled current project. 14,941 words as of last night

Chapter Three: Turnaround is Fairy Play

"D'Arvit!" Holly growled as Artemis pitched forward, collapsing onto her. She staggered under his weight but managed to catch him before he hit the floor. He was not as light as he used to be.

It took her a moment to place the sound she was hearing but when she did, she found herself feeling more irked than ever, which was no mean feat under the circumstances. "Having a good laugh, Mulch?" she said through gritted teeth as she laid Artemis's limp body down onto the floor. The pulsing gold mood lights gave his pallor a sickly hue.

"Guess Orion isn't the only one who's fallen for you," Mulch said with a snicker.

Holly glowered. "Why don't you make yourself useful and help me get him to bed?"

"So the feeling's mutual then?"

"Mulch, so help if you don't shut it right now..."

The orderly had removed a portable hover-stretcher from her belt kit and set it on the floor next to Artemis. "Never mind," Holly snapped at the orderly. "I'll take care of him myself."

The orderly raised a disdainful eyebrow. "If you insist, Miss Short, then gods forbid I should interfere. I'm just here to do my job after all." And, with yet one more offence to add to her list, she stalked out of the room.

Current project: I don't want to say much about this as it's what I'm currently working on. I'm hoping to make lots of headway on my vacation though. ;D

Eirika. In the kitchen. I need to read this in its entirely, and soon. ♥

I remember this meme, but I doubt I could find the last time I did it. I know it was...erm...scary. As in. Long.

Well my entry says I snagged the meme from you, so odds are you did it circa July 2009 as well. ;)

And yes... Eirika in a medieval kitchen. I was actually really pleased with how that piece turned out. I had to research medieval foods in order to write it.

Ah, I'm loving what I see of "Celandines" and "Wood" so far. :D Eirika making sweets for Seth... ♥

Heh-heh. Everyone seems to like the idea of Eirika making dessert. ;)

Hm, new Seth/Eirika stuff. Haven't read something about them in ages. Eirika making sweets for Seth~ Want read.

Which game will your Mary Sue invade? *is curious*
wolfraven80wolfraven80 on September 29th, 2010 12:50 am (UTC)
She'll be invading FE8... assuming I ever get around to finishing it. :/

Oooh~ I'm looking forward to the first two Eirika x Seth fics up there. <3

And, I don't think you're "past your prime" in the TSS fandom! You may not write another "epic" again, but even your little one-shots are enough to prove you've still got it. Not to mention, the amount of people who read and are still inspired by your works even now. ;)

AND, I remember the flower-themed fics~ I looove them~ <3 I can't wait to see what more you come up with!

As for the second one, Eirika. In the kitchen. Cooking for Seth.

< fangirlish squeals > Oooh~ I'm really excited for that! <333

Haha, good luck with all these fics! I need to get to writing too! But, gah! School is x___X Let me make it to the break in about 2 weeks or so first, then we'll see. XDD

wolfraven80: FE:TSS - S/E Staywolfraven80 on September 29th, 2010 12:55 am (UTC)
School does tend to have that effect, as I recall. *makes face*

I had a lot of fun taking requests last year. I might do it again if I'm not overly busy in December. We'll see...

And thanks so much for the encouragement. I think one of the real downsides of studying English in school like I did is that it becomes far to easy to see writing as something that has to be ***SERIOUS*** instead of fun.

I look forward to reading these fics when they're finally completed. They sound great. ^_^

It may be a little while since I am in the middle of an AF story, but I imagine once that's done I might like to spend some time in FE8 again.
shining_valor: tacticiansshining_valor on September 30th, 2010 03:14 pm (UTC)
Because heaven forbid that I actually find things in any kind of a timely manner (AKA - backtracking from previous posts...)

At least you've started on your Mary Sue piece. I merely stare with great dread as the deadline for actually starting that challenge looms closer to an official start with an official finish time. Ye gods, have mercy!

You have lots of good ideas. Keep writing em.

You are only 'Past your prime' when you die. Until then, CEASE THESE FEEBLING THOUGHTS! No matter what else you write or where your attentions turn to in fan writing universe, you will always be a Legendary Epic as far as FE8 writing is concerned. Bar none.

Sorry for the late reply -- real life is sort of a mess right now -- but I wanted to say thank you for the kind comments and the encouragement. They're much appreciated. :)

No worries! Just as long as you got my message, it doesn't matter about timing in a reply.

And still praying for you and yours. Hope things get better for you. :)
