3. When guessed, bold the fandom, put in brackets who got it and sentence why you like the character/person
Forget thirty! I had trouble coming up with
twenty that anyone on my flist would even know. I mean I could have put down some more video games, but since I’m the only person on my flist who has, to my knowledge, played a Final Fantasy game or the //.hack series, it seemed rather pointless to include them. Ah well... So here goes
1.
Naruto: Rock Lee guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (I am such a geek, but I do quite love Rock Lee. He is so ridiculous in every way, but at the same time he’s so earnest and hardworking and has some of the most poignant moments in the series. This bizarre combination makes me stupidly fond of him.)
2.
Maria-Sama Ga Miteru: Yumi guessed by
wha_hoppened (Honestly I’m not sure I could really choose between Yumi and Sachiko. I love them both, in part because I relate to their character flaws quite strongly; I shared many of them especially when I was their age.)
3.
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones : Seth guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (*pets him* He’s strong, gentle, loyal, and a gentleman– and he’s pleasant to look at too. How is he not perfect?;) He’s also a really interesting character if you stop and look more closely at what we know about him from the game’s "support conversations". There’s enough to suggest a certain psychological complexity that makes him wonderful to write about.)
4.
Fruits Basket: Momiji guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (Ah Momiji how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. He’s the cutest thing as a kid, and amazingly easy on the eyes when he gets older. What really gets me, though, is his strength of character, his joie de vivre in the face of all he’s endured. He embraces life in spite of pain; he believes life is worthwhile even though it’s painful and he’s determined to find joy in it. I can’t tell you how profound that is to my mind. It represents to me something I can only aspire to at present. I love him because of his deep affirmation of life and living, because he helps believe it a well.)
5.
Gargoyles: Elisa Maza guessed by
jenniferlupin (She’s a cop, a visible minority, tough, witty, caring, cool, and in love with a Gargoyle– can you believe Disney produced this show? She remains to this day one of the most amazing female leads I’ve seen in an animated work and it was amazing to watch her in the 90s; growing up in the 80s I can tell you strong female leads in cartoon shows were almost non-existent.)
6.
House: Alison Cameron guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (I love the dynamic of strength/weakness at work in Cameron; it makes her very real to me and I really enjoy watching her character develop on the show.)
7.
Babylon 5: Delenn guessed by
jenniferlupin (I love this show as a whole so it’s hard to really pin down one character, but Delenn is certainly great and I’d say has some of the best moment on show, both some of the funniest and some of the most poignant. She’s wise and seems very placid most of the time, but good lord you don’t want to make her angry. Angry!Delenn is something to be in awe of.)
8.
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time: Nel Zelpher guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (What can I say, Nel has got that whole cool warrior-woman thing going. What’s really interesting about her– especially when I got to write about her– is that she presents herself as being tough and all business, but she actually feels things very deeply; she’s intensely loyal and very emotional, but she keeps a lot of it below the surface. I really enjoy characters who, in this way, turn out to be more than they appear on the surface.)
9.
The Lord of the Rings: Eowyn guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (I worship Eowyn. Seriously. I remember being sixteen reading about her slaying the Lord of the Nazgul and to this day it makes me gooey inside; it’s the epitome of coolness for me. I love the image of the female warrior; it speaks to me for reasons I can’t quite explain.)
10.
X-Men: Wolverine guessed by
jenniferlupin (Cool and well... hot as hell. You gotta let me say that just once, right? I’ve always enjoyed the animal vs. man struggle which is central to his character. The best writers, however, highlighted his humanity, his compassion, contrasted against his toughness, his ability to take any and all punishment, both emotional and physical.)
11.
Little Women: Jo March guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (I related to Jo very intensely when I read the book at age twelve. Her boyishness, her dissatisfaction with her lot and her desire to do something great were all things I felt strongly. I didn’t relate to a character so closely again until I read about Hermione more than ten years later.)
12.
The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask: The evil leering moon (Maybe it’s not exactly a character, but it’s definitely a presence in the game. I remember the first time we got a look at that thing. That moon sums up the whole trippiness of the game and brings back a lot of great memories. :) )
13.
Star Trek The Next Generation: Dr. Beverly Crusher guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s it strong females were still emerging on t.v. and I think TNG was one of the first grownup shows I watched. I liked that Beverly was stubborn and opinionated and stuck to her guns– or hyposprays I suppose– even to the point of defying the Prime Directive and Picard on more than one occasion.)
14.
Sailor Moon: Haruka aka Sailor Uranus (I didn’t become a fan of hers until I re-watched season three which is much more interesting if you know the burden Haruka and Michiru have to bear. Haruka’s got that whole cool aura of course, but I also like that grimness about her, caused by the terribly weight on her shoulders.)
15.
Danny Phantom: Sam (Samantha) Manson (She’s a goth and smart and has some fabulous lines in the show– she has this wonderfully dry humour at times; I love it. That make her cool and she and Danny are so darn cute together!)
16.
X-Files: Dana Scully guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (Scully carried this show through the second half of the series. She had a depth to her that Mulder, sadly, never achieved (and that Duchovny couldn’t have pulled off anyway). She had these wonderful, reflective voice-overs at various points; they were great. As a character she evolved over the course of the series from being the cynic to being the believer, from a position of doubt to one of faith, and when you look at that transformation it’s an amazing character arc.)
17.
The West Wing: Donna Moss guessed by
jenniferlupin (Her humour, I just love it. She has some of the best lines ever and, to my mind, she has
the best comeback ever "If you were in an accident I wouldn’t stop for red lights." Best. Ever.)
18.
Stargate SG1: Sam (Samantha) Carter guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (This was my short-lived rebound fandom after the debacle of HPB. I liked Sam because she was tough and smart.)
19.
Ghostbusters: Egon Spengler guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (I was crazy about the cartoon show when I was eight. I loved Egon because he was the smart serious one.)
20.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Leonardo guessed by
jenniferlupin and
wha_hoppened (From Ghostbusters I moved on to an obsession with TMNT and Leonardo because he was serious and quietly charismatic and I absolutely admired and related to this. Do we sense a theme here? ;P )
P.S. Can still see grass and it was several degrees above freezing today. Am still waiting for winter to begin.
