Meta Month, Day 2: Seth's wound
I'm pretty tired so let's go with something simple. Seth is wounded at the start of FE8. We're never told the exact nature of the wound. He only says that it "does not affect [his] lance arm." I've had some people tell me they thought the wound was in his side, and I've seen some doujinshi artists depict it that way as well.

It's always made more sense to me, though, for the wound to be near his shoulder, around or beneath his collar bone. I think he could still get away with saying it doesn't affect his arm in that case. A wound in the side makes less sense to me because Seth would be wearing plate-mail and have a breastplate covering his chest and sides. The joints of the armour are typically more vulnerable, I believe and there were of course lots of joints in the articulated sections of the armour, such as at the shoulders and elbows. It makes a lot more sense to me to think that Valter's lance managed to get through a joint in Seth's shoulder armour than to imagine it somehow breaking through the solid sheet of metal over his ribs.

I even checked one my reference books and I think it backs me up:

"Clearly there was little point in using a cutting weapon against plate-armour; a powerful thrust might, in contrast, find a weak joint and penetrate it."

I always thought it was his shoulder too, weirdly. Oh, the unfortunate limitations of tiny sprite characters!

The real question is... did you think that before you read Tarnish? ;)

I don't know, actually! ;)

Solid reasoning. I do find that more convincing than a wound in the side.

I also figure the breastplate is the piece of armour he'd most likely be wearing even if he was in a hurry to leave the castle as it's basically the most important piece along with the helmet.

I agree, however, if we go with the FE armor being FE armor, the side makes sense. It's usually exposed!

But for the most part I like to imagine that FE armor is just...mostly for show, you know? Not exactly what they'd actually wear... Because no way would most of that save them. xD;;

Spikes on armor = stupid.

No wonder Jeigan characters are ineffective in gameplay. Too many spikes on the armor!

Seth doesn't have spikes on his armour. ;P

Actually, though, if you go by the battle sprites, I'd say the cavaliers are depicted as wearing full armour. That's I based my image of them on when they're actually in battle. I always thought of the character portraits as the way they looked outside of battle-- though I know they use them for all purposes during the game.

Seth's actually useful. Unlike Jagen, Arran, etc.

I always thought of the character portraits as the way they looked outside of battle

I'm not sure even the battle sprites make sense, given how few unpromoted characters wear any sort of decent coverage-- like, say, helmets. But a paladin battle sprite at least makes a fair amount of sense, yes.

A shoulder wound also has the benefit of being survivable.

You take a wound to the side, and then proceed to go riding around on a horse, well, you're either going to bleed out quickly or get gangrene.

Or you can just use a vulnerary and heal everything instantly! *grumble grumble* I should try to write up a post about those things. I refuse to acknowledge that they exist when I write fic because they would just make everything too easy. :/
